  • Versione Italiana: La perdita uditiva associata all’età avanzata o presbiacusia è la più frequente causa di sordità permanente e una delle più comuni malattie invalidanti dell’anziano. Essa coinvolge almeno tre sistemi: la periferia uditiva, le vie acustiche centrali e il sistema cognitivo. Lo studio della percezione verbale costituisce il mezzo d’indagine migliore della presbiacusia essendo questa condizionata sia da fattori uditivi sia da variabili cognitive. Vi è una discreta evidenza clinica e scientifica sull’effetto favorevole in termini di qualità di vita prodotto da apparecchi acustici, impianti cocleari e ausili per l’ascolto Essi tuttavia non sono sufficienti se non si prende in considerazione il quadro cognitivo, lo stato psicologico, sanitario e sociorelazionale del paziente nel contesto di un percorso riabilitativo più ampio

    English Version: The age-related hearing loss (ARHL), ie. presbyacusis, is the most common cause of permanent deafness and one of the most common disabling illnesses of the elderly. It involves at least three systems: the auditory periphery, the central acoustic paths, and the cognitive system. The study of verbal perception is the best means to investigate ARHL as this condition is due to hearing factors and cognitive variables. There is some clinical and scientific evidence of the beneficial effect on quality of life produced by hearing aids, cochlear implants and assistive listening devices. However, they are not sufficient unless the cognitive framework, the psychological state, healthcare and social aspects of the patient are properly considered in the context of a wider rehabilitation pathway.
